  Digital Signs

ONELAN’s Net-Top-Boxes (NTBs) are a series of Digital Signage (DS) Media Player devices designed for different applications inDigital Signage Networks (DSNs). In standalone situations, the DS Player must be able to offer a user interface for media scheduling and media playing capability. In networked (DSN) applications a means to distribute media over a Wide Area Network (WAN) must also be provided.

The NTB series provides all of these functions embedded within the media players themselves, as well as network security and software update mechanisms.

How Digital Signage Has Advanced

The earliest versions of digital signage made use of LEDs linked to computers. Text and numbers could be displayed, even animated to run from one side of the screen to another. These were used frequently outside banks and schools to deliver time and temperature data as well as targeted messages about upcoming events and special offers.

This was quite an advance over the older static signs that required a person to manually go to the sign and change the messages. The messages could be programmed using a personal computer and set in motion. The computer could then be disconnected and the signs would continue to run through the program until stopped.

Today, LCD signs, plasma, and more advanced LED signs technology have made it possible to provide much richer content using digital signage. One can create animated graphic images, reproduce photos of products and people, create targeted advertising based on the location of the signs, and more.

It is also possible to program displays to change the content and display different messages at different times. This can be a simple rotating cycle based on displaying each message for a set amount of time or a complex program that modifies the message displayed based on the behavior of people in the immediate vicinity of the digital sign.

Today's more advanced digital signage can be linked into networks, much like computers, so that messages and other content can be rotated from one display to another automatically or with just a few keystrokes by an administrator. This is also a useful ability in places such as airports and bus terminals where people in different areas might need access to the same information at the same time from public displays. Examples would include schedules of departures and arrivals. Such networks could be set up wirelessly or via an Ethernet type wired network.

Every Day Usage For Digital Signage

Digital signage UK is used by businesses in many different ways. One of the most common is outdoor advertising on digital billboards. The use of this technology makes it possible to display multiple messages from a single billboard location without anyone having to go to the location and change the content of the sign.

Transportation hubs use multiple displays linked in a network to provide travelers with information about incoming and outgoing flights, trains, or buses. This allows customers to see this information from many different locations within the terminal.

Restaurants use such led signs to display specials. This can include special monthly, weekly, daily or specific time offers. For example, one restaurant chain uses their signs to advertise different menu items throughout the day as well as their daily "happy hour" when drinks are offered at half price.

Schools, churches, and businesses use this technology to advertise upcoming events of special interest within the community and in these industries digital signage displays are becoming ever more popular. Sometimes, this could be a single sign linked to a simple media player and/or computer or a network of linked signs displaying the same message at different locations. It is also possible to program the network to rotate different messages from one sign to the next in the network and display several different ones at the same time.

Most digital signage displays use proprietary software to handle the programming of the media player that controls the sign or signs. Wireless Wi-Fi connections can be used to create the network, although it is more common to see networks linked through an Ethernet type wired connection. It is also possible for a large corporation or chain to link up a network of displays scattered across a large area using the internet and a special digital advertising network player that links the displays with the internet site where the content is programmed and scheduled via some specialised but extremly easy to use digital signage software.
